Well, starting from the beginning , this week I'll share my
experiences in Amsterdam, land of sex , drugs and electronic music (not so much
rock'n'roll :P )
I've been there twice, first of them in
October 2013 and the second one in May 2014. Amsterdam is a great city, but in my opinion, I couldn't be there for a long
period, I think I'd get bored. At the beginning is really funny to see
sex everywhere in the Red Light District , the coffee shops and the smell of weed but after a while, you don't want to
live in that environment anymore.
Let's start by the main attraction of the
city... the Red Light District. Well... Deserves the visit, of course, but if you're not willing to get in (if you know
what I mean) you just see it in 1h and that's it!! You have a wide range of
options available and you can choose whatever you like and whatever you wanna
try.. Be careful, some ladies seem photoshopped
:P
Talking about the drugs... well as Snoop
Dogg says you can "smoke weed every day..."
because you can find a coffee shop around each corner in the city center :)
Most of them don't sell alcohol because mixing drugs and alcohol can be
dangerous (be responsible if you go there :) ) . Here're some places where I've been that I totally recommend:
Paradox (http://paradoxcoffeeshop.com/), for space cakes, please do read the instructions :)
Bulldog (http://www.thebulldog.com/), is the biggest coffee shop franchising in amsterdam. Deserves the visit!!!
Dampkring (http://dampkring-coffeeshop-amsterdam.nl/). Coffeeshop where Oceans Twelve movie was shooted. (Photo below)
At last but not least, electronic music.
Amsterdam is one of the European capitals
of electronic music and Netherlands is where the most of the best DJ in the world come from.Tiesto, Hardwell, Armin
Van Burren are some examples. Thus, you have a lot of spaces and events that
you can attend. The 2 biggest venues are
Air Amsterdam (http://www.air.nl/) and Melkweg
(https://www.melkweg.nl/en/) and around October, Amsterdam receives one of the
biggest events of EDM - the Amesterdam Dance Event
(https://www.amsterdam-dance-event.nl/).
I didn't attend to these venues but I did attend to some bars in the 2 main nightlife zones which are Rembrandt and Leidseplein. To be honest with you, I felt a little bit discriminated and I felt that natives are a little bit xenophobes. In some bars, the guards refuse to speak English , and every single dutch speaks perfect English, and we were barred because we were tourists. That was my experience, tell me if I'm wrong.
Well, in the next post I'll share my gastronomical and cultural experiences in Amsterdam.
Hope you like, don't forget to send me feedback , if you wish :)
Cheers,
Rui
